Cleanup and other closure activities are the remaining work the Department of Energy is committed to completing at the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC). This work includes building demolition and soil and groundwater remediation.
As a result of past operations in Area IV, contamination of buildings, soil and groundwater is known to have occurred. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is actively engaged in the characterization and remediation as required. The DOE works with the responsible regulatory agencies to achieve our project goals.
Cleanup standards for the ETEC Closure program are established by the applicable regulations and regulatory agencies. There are cleanup standards for chemical constituents and radiological constituents. In locations where both radiological and chemical impacts are found, both cleanup standards apply. These standards ensure that any future user of a facility or site will not be exposed to radionuclides or chemicals that result in unacceptable health risk.
This cleanup includes the demolition of radiological facilities, demolition of most support buildings, cleanup of solid waste management units (SWMUs), and disposal of all waste off site at approved facilities. Some cleanup began in the late 1960's with the demolition of facilities that were no longer needed and continues today.
Waste from cleanup activities at ETEC is generated from excavated soil, unusable equipment, unusable supplies, and building debris. The DOE ships this waste off site to the appropriate disposal facilities.
