Building 4020 SWMU

Description

This page describes the RCRA (chemical) cleanup of the Building 4020 solid waste management unit (SWMU).

Building 4020, otherwise known as the “Hot Lab” was constructed in 1959 to remotely handle radioactive materials.  Activities in the Hot Lab included handling, analysis, machining and cleaning of highly radioactive and irradiated materials. The use of chemically hazardous materials, including various cleaning solvents, was required.

All hazardous materials and equipment were removed and decontaminated to support demolition. The building foundations and basement were excavated in 1997.  Soil and debris were sampled and analyzed for chemical as well as radiological constituents for waste characterization and disposal at an appropriate off site landfill.

Rocketdyne, ORISE and the California DHS sampled the soil at the bottom of the excavation and verified that the land was suitable for unrestricted use.  The area was then backfilled.

A final status survey was conducted in September 1999 consistent with Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM).  The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) performed a verification survey. The results verify that the site meets the requirements for release without radiological restrictions.

This site has been released from radiological controls and is ready for the RFI sampling for chemicals under the RCRA Corrective Action program.

See the Building 4020 history page for additional information on past radiological cleanup.
