Radioactive Materials Handling Facility SWMU

Description

This page describes the RCRA (chemical) cleanup of the Radioactive Materials Handling Facility solid waste management unit (SWMU).

The cleanup activities at RMHF are governed by both radiological and chemical investigation/remedial processes. The radiological cleanup will be preformed as a non-time critical removal action in the near future. Additional information regarding the non-time critical removal action at RMHF is available.

The chemical investigation/remedial effort involves two separate processes: the Closure Plan for the RCRA permitted units and the RCRA Corrective Action program for the solid waste management units, i.e. 4614 hold-up basin, the leachfield and the soils underlying the entire facility. The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) oversees the chemical investigation/remedial effort.

The leachfield and surrounding areas has been surveyed for radiological constituents.   These areas meet standards for unrestricted radiological release.  The 4614 hold-up basin was removed in 2006.  Debris was packaged and shipped off-site for disposal.  A radiological survey was conducted following the excavation.  The former 4614 hold-up basin area meets unrestricted release criteria.

A number of groundwater monitoring wells have been installed nearby the former leach field.  Analytical results of the groundwater indicate chemical and radiological impacts.

The DOE remediation effort at this SWMU will continue under the oversight of DTSC.

See the RMHF history page for additional information on past radiological cleanup.
