EPA Radiological Survey of Area IV
The EPA is planning to conduct a sampling program to establish radiological background surrounding SSFL. It is also planning to conduct a radiological survey of Area IV. The following table presents a reverse chronology of activities in support of this project.

DOE and EPA Sign Interagency Agreement On April 23, 2009, representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region IX signed an Interagency Agreement that transfers $38.3 million to EPA to be used to complete a comprehensive radiological survey in Santa Susana Field Laboratory Area IV and northern undeveloped lands. DOE’s funds were appropriated under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In July 2008, DOE transferred $1.5 million to EPA to fund a radiological background study for SSFL. In February 2009, DOE had transferred an additional $1.7 million to EPA to fund planning of the radiological survey. The $38.3 million will complete DOE funding of the EPA’s estimate of $40 million needed to complete the radiological survey.
EPA will use the funding to develop a historical site assessment to evaluate past radiological activities, conduct a surface gamma scan, and perform surface and subsurface soil sampling and a groundwater analysis. Approximately 10,000 soil and groundwater samples are expected to be analyzed. The EPA’s SSFL radiological background study and the SSFL Area IV radiological survey will be useful in evaluating cleanup options at SSFL and to support the preparation of the SSFL Area IV Environmental Impact Statement. |

DOE Announces DOE/EPA Interagency Agreement for Background Study The US Department of Energy and the US Environmental Protection Agency signed an Interagency Agreement (IAG) for EPA to conduct a study to determine the radiological background of Area IV of SSFL, and to prepare a cost, scope and schedule for the first phase of a radiological site characterization. |

EPA Draft Scoping Document Following EPA's criticism of the 1995 Area IV Radiological Characterization Survey, the DOE and EPA conducted preliminary discussions on a proposed EPA survey of Area IV. These discussions resulted in a draft Scoping Document that included the scope, cost and schedule for an EPA survey. This survey was never implemented. |
