Since 1953, the DOE sponsored a broad range of energy related research and development at SSFL Area IV. The cutting-edge nature of the research attracted some of the brightest minds and they succeeded in making lasting contributions to engineering and science.
Most of our cleanup is historical as well as our operations. The operation includes research in the advancement of nuclear energy as well as liquid metals development. Additionally, research in solar and other unique technologies were performed at ETEC.
Nuclear Energy Research
Eight major nuclear reactor testing and development programs were being conducted in Area IV.
Liquid Metal Operations
Many non-nuclear operations and tests were performed at Area IV. The Energy Technology Engineering Center was the DOE's center for the research and development of liquid metal components.
Other Work
The Energy Technology Engineering Center performed a variety of energy-related research for the DOE. Among other things, ETEC engaged in solar, geothermal, energy conservation, coal, and ocean energy conversion research.
