Regulation

Cleanup activities at the Engineering Technology Engineering Center (ETEC) are governed by many regulations that are enforced by various regulators.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created and distributed a graphic to the public at the December 2002 Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) Workgroup meeting to illustrate the interaction of the major regulations and regulators guiding cleanup activities at ETEC.

In additional to the major regulations identified in the EPA graph, three additional regulations apply to the continued clean-up and closure activities at ETEC. These are: the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The scroll shapes on the diagram to the right represent a Federal or California law or regulation, the ovals state the purpose of a law or regulation, and the rectangles are the Federal or California regulator.
