Liquid Metal Development Lab-2

Description

The Liquid Metal Development Laboratory-2 (LMDL-2) was designed to provide prototype testing of mechanical devices and instrumentation for the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies.  Two sodium systems were housed in Building 4057; both contained a sodium piping “loop” having the capacity of 42 gallons and capable of heating sodium to 1300 degrees F.  Its mission was to perform non-nuclear testing of sodium components.

Cleanup

The sodium system was dismantled in 1999 when all the facility sodium was recycled.
